Disaster Preparedness Plan - Have the Necessary Tools and Supplies

Author: James Williams

The thought of creating a disaster preparedness plan with your family can seem like a daunting task. Too many people overlook the necessity of being ready for anything. Whether it is a natural disaster, loss of work or some other monumental reason for using your emergency storage supplies, you must be ready. When beginning the task, it really becomes apparent how many things we utilize every day that we take for granted. From toilet paper to macaroni and everything in between, it's hard to imagine having enough in case of a disaster. There are tools and supplies every person prepared for a disaster should have.

How do you begin the overwhelming process of creating a disaster preparedness plan? The first thing you should do is create a checklist of essentials for every member of your family. This list should include everything from toilet paper, blankets, firewood and clothing to food and water. When putting food on the list, remember that everything that will last during a disaster should be nonperishable or even dehydrated foods. Once you create the list, start the process of purchasing items. Set aside a reasonable amount every month, perhaps $100, and begin making purchases: emergency blankets, bulk stores of toilet paper, bundles of firewood, warm clothing and dehydrated food products. Foods like eggs, butter and milk can even be purchased dried and packaged in storage containers.

When deciding what things to purchase first for your disaster preparedness plan, consider what you use the most. If your family eats macaroni and cheese four days a week, buy large packages in bulk to cut down on costs. Secondhand stores are great sources for finding inexpensive clothing items like heavy coats, shoes and sweaters. Another item that should be at the top of your list of things to purchase is a water purifier, obviously something non-electric. Emergency preparedness stores also carry large barrels of clean water. These take up a lot of space, but if there is no water around to purify, you will have a store of fresh water available to drink.

Many people have not even considered the level of attention everyone should give to having a disaster preparedness plan. You and your family can rest safely with the knowledge that you are prepared for almost anything that could happen. Obtain your storage items, tools and supplies today to provide safety for your family tomorrow. Emergency Disaster Preparedness Goes Live

Author: Scott Kastner

On Monday, City of Los Angeles Controller Laura Chick said her just completed audit of the city’s preparedness for large-scale emergencies and health crises “cries out for a coordinated, constantly up-dated, state of the art strategic plan.”

“I want the public to know that the City of Los Angeles is not as well-prepared for a widespread disaster as we need to be and as we can be,” she stated.

Surveys by emergency preparedness officials of several other large cities found they have concerns about some of the same issues that Los Angeles faces. These officials said they will be studying the Los Angeles audit to ascertain what recommendations and actions might be applicable to their own cities and surrounding communities.

These findings support for the need of individuals in our country and throughout the world, to prepare for natural and man-made disasters. There is both historical and now recent proof that our government is not ready to rush to our aid. Should a 7.8 earthquake hit along the San Andres or New Madrid faults or should another category 4 or 5 hurricane hit one of our coastal cities there will not be immediate life-saving support.  Unless you prepare for such events yourself you risk pain, suffering and possibly death. We must all help ourselves first and then reach out to help our friends and neighbors to help and support them.

The question of how to prepare is on many people’s minds. But how to prepare is not very clear. Yes there are lists and lists that you can find with suggested supplies. Yes it is possible to go from store to store and get food and water as well as the other goods. However, it becomes a chore that according to statistics most Americans are not doing. Only 27-32% of American households are ready for such disasters.

http://www.SurvivalKitsOnline.com has recognized the need for a clearer path to emergency disaster preparedness and has taken up the challenge by making their survival experts available via online customer service chat. Now you can simply ask any questions you may have regarding emergency disaster preparedness and have a real time conversation with someone who can help you sort it all out.

Typical questions include: “Where do I start? Which kit would be best for my family? Should I have a kit in my car? And what should I do for my pets?”

“At Survival Kits Online our knowledgeable staff is able to assist while educating the customer” says company partner Chad Allen. “Through our extensive research we are able disseminate information to our customers and help make sense of it all”.

SurvivalKitsOnline.com has had a web presence for the past 3 years and has a retail store in West Hills California. They have pre-made survival kits and also create custom kits for many of their customers. The number one goal of the company is saving lives while making emergency supplies and survival kits that are affordable for everyone.

Hopefully, our cities, states and country can get the much needed organization it will take to deal with the problems at hand. Emergency disaster preparedness for each individual is as essential as a spare tire in you automobile. Everyone aggress that you can’t drive around with out that spare tire and no one can ignore the need to prepare.

Three Tips When Planning Your Disaster Preparedness Supplies

Author: Eric Childress

Think back across the last 20 years and about disasters that caused interruption of the delicate food supply system that gets all our food to the grocery stores. What if you were in the Gulf Coast region when Hurricane Katrina rumbled through? What about within a couple of hundred miles of Mount Saint Helens and the ash fall region? Then ask yourself if you are a location that could be struck by a natural disaster like an earthquake, hurricane, flooding or anything else that can disrupt the food provisioning system.

Do you have loved ones in your family that depend on you to provide for them? How would you feel if you can not take care of your family and children? Visualize what it would be like day after day looking at your hungry and thirsty children and not being able to do anything about it. The time to stop something like that from happening is immediately.

Here are three items to help you to get started on making a plan.

Make sure you have a safe place that everyone knows to go to. For most people this will be their home, but it also could be a house up in the woods, or a relative's house. It is a good idea to have a location that is easy to get to and won't have lots of people that will try to take your stores.

Have a source of water, a way to keep it, and a way to get fresh water. A good way to do this is to have a well dug on your property. Another is to find a stream or pond close by and ensure you have water filtration equipment on hand.

Have a supply of food available. You can begin by getting some cases of canned soup and beans locally, but to do this the right way you should calculate the quantity of calories that you will require based on the number of people that are dependent on you and how long you think food will be unavailable. Also, make sure that food does not go bad by rotating it regularly or buying food prepared for long-term storage.

The time to get ready for an disaster so you can plan for the survival of your family is before the disaster hits. Make a plan and take action now!

Emergency First Aid Kits Are an Essential Element in Disaster Preparedness Supplies

Author: Lynn Porter

If you are gathering disaster preparedness supplies, it is important to understand that emergency first aid kits are highly essential. Disaster preparedness is extremely important for all individuals in all locations of the world. It has been established that disasters affect several hundreds of thousands individuals on an annual basis. The effects of the disasters that impact individuals throughout the world are considered to be lasting to both the people as well as their property. While it is true that there are several organizations that specialize in providing relief, care, and supplies to those that have been impacted by a disaster, it is important that you take the time to prepare as well. One of the most important aspects of your preparation should be creating a disaster preparedness first aid kit.

When a disaster strikes, you and/or the ones that you love could suffer injuries and/or sicknesses that could have a detrimental impact on your health. Emergency first aid kits provide you with the ability to provide care in an immediate fashion to an individual that is suffering from a specific type of injury and/or illness. In many instances, these kits provide you with the means to deal with a health complication in a satisfactory manner. In other instances, a disaster preparedness first aid kit provides you with the ability to provide some degree of health treatment until an upper level professional that specializes in healthcare is able to properly care for the individual or individuals suffering from sickness and/or injury. Examples of these professionals include law enforcement officers, paramedics, EMTs, firefighters, nurses, and/or doctors.

The purpose and intent associated with disaster preparedness emergency first aid kits is to ensure the following:

A first aid kit is designed to prevent further sickness and/or injury occurring to the individual that is suffering from disaster related health complications.

The kit should provide the tools and products that will assist in preserving not only the well-being of the sufferer, but their life as a whole as well.

Emergency first aid kits that are used during or immediately after some form of disaster affecting the health and lives of individuals should include the items and tools that are necessary to promote a successful recovery.

There are several types of disasters that may affect the lives of people living in various regions of the world. Examples of these include emergencies induced by chemicals, the failure of dams, earthquakes, various types of fires, flooding, emergencies that involve hazardous materials, those that stem from weather conditions such as those related to extreme heat and/or extreme cold, hurricanes, tornadoes, terrorist related disasters, tsunami, and even basic thunderstorms. When purchasing a first aid kit or creating your own, it is important to research the steps that should be taken in the disasters that may affect your region.

Once you have determined basic first aid steps, it is important to determine the supplies that will be needed to perform those steps. For example, if you live in an area that is prone to extreme heat, you will want to include items in your first aid kit that work to cool an individual while not placing them in shock, medicines for muscle cramping, as well as items that will assist in the effects of dehydration. By knowing what items are most productive in emergency first aid kits for your region, you will have all of the tools and supplies that you need to handle any type of emergency.

Disaster Preparedness - Key to Business Survival

Author: Christine Morrison

In light of the recent devastation that has struck Japan and the Southern part of the United States, businesses should develop a strategy to prepare for any disaster, small or large, that could have a significant effect on their business.  While it is highly unlikely that many of us will have to deal with earthquakes, tsunamis or tornadoes, the possibility of numerous other potential calamities, both natural and man-made,  is very real and should be planned for in order to minimize damage and lost time.  The following is a checklist of areas that businesses should address in disaster planning.

Identify what disasters may strike your businessList what potential threats might strike your business. This should include the threat of a cyber attack (for example, viruses, web site hacking).

Test back up systems already in place - Good business practice usually calls for the implementation of a back up system, especially with regard to computer systems and data.  But has anyone ever tested the backup to ensure that it is easily recoverable and that it works?  Previously, most companies relied on tape backups.  Oftentimes, someone would forget to change the tapes or not take a copy off site.   With high speed internet access, it is recommended that you use a service that continually backs up your system and stores it electronically at secured locations.  This will ensure that all data has been backed up completely.

Prioritize business functionsShould your business be struck by a disaster, what are the most vital functions that need to be reestablished in order to get back in business?  Listing these out will provide a focus as to where and how resources should be allocated.

Identify and post evacuation routes, assembly areas and location of emergency suppliesIt is important that all employees and customers know the quickest and safest way out of the building and where items such as fire extinguishers and first aid kits are located.  A designated meeting place should be established for each department so that all employees can be accounted for.  The manager of each department should be charged with accounting for all department staff.  Additionally, a manager should be charged with ensuring that all customers have safely evacuated the building.

Keep an up to date listing of contact informationIt is essential to maintain a current listing of names, addresses, phone numbers (both land and cell) and e-mail addresses for all employees, key vendors and your insurance company. This will allow for ease of contact.

Evaluate the requirements of an alternative work location - As part of your business resumption plan, you should contemplate what equipment, facilities and work space will be required.  This may include the need to scout out alternative locations.

Review your insurance coverage annuallyToo often we assume that the coverage presented to us by our insurance agents provides blanket protection.  It is not until an actual event occurs that we realize that not all disasters are created equal.  Suddenly, the coverage thought to be there is either lacking or doesn't exist at all.  A thorough review of your coverage for any potential disaster, to expose the gaps that may exist, should be performed.  Areas such as business interruption, emergency expenses, employee wages and business relocation should be addressed.  It is also important to know what type of documentation is necessary to substantiate your claims.

The devastation that a disaster causes should not be compounded by a lack of planning or preparation.  It is not uncommon for an ill prepared business to never reopen afterwards.  By developing a disaster plan, businesses greatly maximize their chances for recovery and their ability to survive a disaster.

New Family Survival Kit: More Options for Disaster Preparedness

Author: Scott Kastner

The 4 person survival kit packed in a duffle bag, is the newest addition to www.SurvivalKitsOnline.com line of products. It was designed with families in mind. Statistically, only about 32% of Americans are prepared for disasters and out of that number these people may be vastly under prepared. Having the proper equipment to evacuate, shelter in place or live outside in the elements may become a reality should a natural or man-made disaster strike.

Survival Kits Online is based in Southern California where earthquakes are a fact of life, so the company's owners Chad Allen and Scott Kastner spend countless hours to find the best and most essential items for their new 4 person kit.  This kit is a great addition to both Survival Kits Online's web store and retail location in West Hills, California.

Humans can only live a few days without water, so after a disaster strikes water becomes very precious.  Most survival kits on the market have very little water in them, which can put a person in risk of dehydration. The new 4 person kit has twice the water of most kits as well as a water storage collection bag and water purification tablets. These features facilitate a greater chance of survival.  The kit also has enough emergency food rations so after a disaster it is easy to have enough calorie intake to keep energy levels up. There are 90 items packed in this new kit making it a comprehensive kit at a great value.

Everyone should start off by having a disaster plan. Your disaster plan should include the following:

  • Purchase at least one survival kit for each family member or kits that will provide for more then one person. Have enough supplies for each person for at least 72 hours. You should have kits in your home, autos, work and your child's school.
  • Decide where your family will reunite if separated. It is best to have two meeting places just in case you need to evacuate your neighborhood.
  • Keep a list of emergency phone numbers and provide the list to each family member.
  • Choose an out of state friend or relative whom family members can call after an earthquake or any type of disaster to report your condition. Many times after a disaster telephones may not be able to call out locally but it is possible that will be able to call someone who is not in the local area.
  • Know the safest spot in each room. Under sturdy tables, desks, or against an inside wall
  • Know the danger spots. Windows, mirrors, hanging objects, fireplaces and tall furniture.
  • Conduct practice drills. Physically place yourself and your children in safe locations and explain to the child why this area is the safest.
  • Learn how to shut off the gas, water and electricity in case the lines are damaged.
  • Attend training through either the local fire department or The Red Cross for first-aid, CPR and disaster preparedness classes such as CERT.

Over two hundred thousand people were affected by disasters in 2008. Each year there are countless earthquakes, fires, floods, hurricanes and man-made disasters such as chemical spills or terrorist attacks. It is all of our responsibilities to prepare. At http://www.survivalkitsonline.com we specialize in disaster preparedness and are happy to help with making your disaster plan. We provide bulk discounts as well as specialize in custom kits, printing on kits, or any other special needs.

Disaster Preparedness

Author: John Parks

It's natural disaster season in the South—the time when hurricanes are due to hit and winter storms are due to bury us all under freezing temperatures. This is the time of year when getting stranded or stuck without power proves to be the most dangerous. In acknowledgment of this time of year, the Huntsville Utility companies have come out with a list of ways that you can prepare for emergencies.

Clothing:

Huntsville Utilities advocates dressing in layers. This doesn't have to mean panty hose inside of tights inside of leggings inside of jeans. While some might feel better about going to these extremes, dressing in layers is for practical purposes not just keeping warm. When you wear layers you can take off or put back on clothing to help keep you feeling comfortable. You don't want to make yourself look like the little brother from A Christmas Story. You want to be comfortable and prepared.

Test Test Test

Test your home's smoke detectors and invest in a carbon monoxide detector as well. The winter months lead to more use of fireplaces and other things that produce carbon monoxide. Make sure your detectors all have fresh batteries. Check the batteries in your flashlights every couple of days (this only has to be a quick flick; you don't have to leave them on). Test the batteries in your transistor radio. Check, test and double check everything.

Stock Up

Those people who run to the store and bring home cases of bottled water and batteries as soon as disaster season starts are not paranoid. They are prepared. You don't have to build your own bunker, but you do want to have a large supply of bottled water, batteries and food that will not spoil—canned foods, jarred foods and dry foods are best. Food that you can put into a box and not have to worry about whether or not it has expired. It is also a good idea to keep some dried milk on hand and extra baby food for any pets that will need feeding.

Make a plan

Have a designated place for everything that you will need and practice having to get to those things in the dark. Run your family through drills where you exit your home via a variety of escape routes. Keep a map of your home posted somewhere that everyone can see. Make sure that these escape routes and supply locations are memorized and that utilizing them is second nature. That way you won't have to worry about what to do next in the event of an emergency.
When we were kids we learned all about being prepared and that need for preparation does not go away as we get older. If anything it gets more important because we will have our own families depending on us for leadership and survival. Make sure that you know what to do, how to do it and how to make sure that others are safe as well. You'll be glad you took the time to work everything out ahead of time!

Survival Kits for Disaster Preparedness Month

Author: Scott Kastner

September is the sixth annual National Preparedness Month (NPM), which is the perfect time to remind citizens about the importance of having an emergency preparedness survival kit and plan for their families, businesses, and communities. FEMA's Ready Campaign is asking Americans to think about how prepared they are for anything from earthquakes to terrorist attacks.

www.SurvivalKitsOnline.com has joined a coalition of over 3,200 members across the nation for the third year in a row. This coalition includes a wide range of state and local governments, businesses, and organizations.  NPM is held each September to increase public awareness about emergency preparedness. Owners of www.survivalkitsonline.com Chad Allen and Scott Kastner, eagerly participate in this month long event in order it help educate the public and help save lives.

This year, the Ready Campaign is helping Americans understand preparedness goes beyond fire alarms, smoke detectors, dead-bolt locks and extra food in the pantry to change perceptions about emergency preparedness and help Americans understand what it truly means to be "Ready." Having survival kits and supplies on hand for each family member it essential. Each person should have a survival kits at home, work, school and automobile with enough supplies to be self-sufficient for at least a minimum 72 hours.

A study released this summer by Citizen Corps, found that Americans are not as prepared as they think. Fewer than half of individuals 42% have an emergency plan for their home and less, approximately 32% of Americans have 72-hour survival kits.

Making an emergency disaster plan starts with gathering information about where you live, work, go to school and anywhere you spend great amounts of time. You will need to know what types of emergencies or disasters could affect that location.  Once you have this information, you are ready to sit with family members to formulate your plan. The plan should include contact information, evacuation procedures including two meeting places, an outside the area designated contact, as well as a complete inventory of all survival kits and supplies. Each person in your family or group should have a good understanding of what to expect should a natural or man-made disaster strike. Once you have a written plan schedule a time twice per year to review and revise this plan.

Spend some time during the month of September to "Get Prepared to Survive" ®

Disaster Preparedness Tactics

Author: Nick Johnston

Disasters can happen anywhere and anytime around the world: fires, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and tornados are some of the most feared natural disasters. They have taken billions of lives till date and we still live with an impression that we cannot be affected by them.

If a disaster occurs in your community, local agencies and disaster-relief groups are there for help. However, emergency personnel may not be available immediately. They may take several hours, to several days to reach. It's your preparedness that can decide your chances of survival in such situations. Your emergency preparedness will be the key to you and your family's safety and survival.

Disaster preparedness is an essential element for you and your family's well-being. A little time spent today can ensure the well being of you and your loved once in the time of disasters.

Having essential survival plans and supplies like a family communication plan and emergency kits can provide the necessary resources to help you and your family get through a lot of difficult situations that may come up unforeseen, a bad storm, fires, earthquake being a few of them.

Survival supplies and preparation:-

1. Establish a communication plan: - Phones have become the key communication equipment today. Almost all our communication that happens when we are not face to face with a person happens on phones. Have you ever given a though as to how will you communicate with you loved once if phones are out of service. Now let's add a fact to this situation. During a natural or manmade calamity or disaster phones are bound to go out of service.

Does your family know what to do if you can't contact one another by phone? Where would you gather in an emergency? We should all have a plan that is easy enough for even our youngest children to remember and follow.

As a matter of fact the U. S. government has in force a plan that in the event of another terrorist attack, EVERYONE's ability to use cell phones, blackberries, etc., will immediately be cut-off, as this is the preferred communication source used by terrorists and is often the way that their bombs are detonated. How will you communicate with your loved ones in the event you cannot speak to each other?

Solution is a clear cut and well defined plan that should be in place before hand.

2. Evacuation Plans: - In cases where evacuations become necessary, the local officials provide information through media and other methods like sirens and telephonic calls. There may be situations under which you and your family may feel threatened and evacuations may become necessary to avoid these situations.

Alwayskeep a tank full of gas in your car if there seems like a possibility of evacuation. Gas may not be available or there may be a shortage of time to get it under such circumstances. Always keep your survival supplies handy and at a place where you and your family members can locate it easily. We will cover the items that should be a part of your survival supplies in our later posts.
